Concurrent Ed Overview

StFX offers a combined BA/BEd, BSc/BEd, BAHK/BEd, or BScHK/BEd general degree program. The Concurrent Education program is specifically designed for those seeking a structured 5-Year pathway to become a licensed teacher. This program meets the minimum requirements of both degrees in five years as well as teacher certification requirements.

Admissions

1. General Undergraduate Admissions
   1. For September 2026 only: Please see 2a below.
   2. For September 2027 forward: Apply to your general undergraduate program of choice. See Direct from High School Admissions Requirements. The general undergraduate program application includes the option to apply for the Concurrent Education program.
2. Concurrent Education Program Admissions
   1. For September 2026 only: If you have been accepted into a StFX undergraduate program, are entering your first year of study, and are interested in the Concurrent Education program, please click here to apply.
   2. For September 2027 forward: Once accepted into your undergraduate program of choice, your application will move forward to the Education Department for review.

Please note:

• All acceptances into the  Concurrent Education program are conditional. Conditions include:
  • Successful projected completion of general undergraduate BA, BSc, BAHK, or BScHK degree.
  • A minimum cumulative 70% GPA in both Education and non-Education courses (with particular attention to teachable subjects for those in the secondary stream).
  • Completion of 3 credits in EDUC/Anthropology 105 course.
  • Completion of 3 credits in EDUC 475 Principles & Practices Concurrent.
  • Successful completion of Colloquium A, B, & C (pass/fail).
• Admissions to limited-enrolment programs is competitive, meeting the minimum average for a general program does not guarantee admission.
• The first three years of the  Concurrent Education program are called the Pre-Professional Years. The last two years are the Professional Years of the program.
• The terms of the conditional acceptance will be reviewed throughout the Pre-Professional Years.
• The conditional acceptance will be removed in the winter of the third year if all Pre-Professional Year requirements are satisfied.
• Conditional acceptances are also attached to the declared stream of study (e.g. elementary, secondary, HKin). Permission to change your degree program or stream will depend on seat availability. This process requires individuals to consult with both academic advisors and the BEd Department. 

3. Concurrent Education Program - Promotion to Professional Years

   In the winter of your third year of study, a final evaluation of your progress is conducted to ensure the conditions outlined above have been satisfied for program promotion into the final two Professional Years.

   Students who do not satisfy the conditions of acceptance outlined above may transfer into a four-year undergraduate program. Students can apply for the traditional post-undergraduate BEd program if they still wish to pursue an Education degree upon completion of their 4-year undergraduate degree. Concurrent Education Program Pathways

Experiential Placements: Practicums and Colloquiums

Colloquium courses are intended to serve as foundational courses in the Concurrent BEd program, introducing students to ideas about teaching and learning. The colloquium courses will connect students to the Education program during the first three Pre-Professional years, allowing them to begin broadening their thinking about teaching and learning throughout their degree.

• Colloquium A: Pre-Professional Year 1
• Colloquium B: Pre-Professional Year 2
• Colloquium C: Pre-Professional Year 3

Practicum provides experiential learning in schools across Nova Scotia. During practicum, students will formally take on teaching responsibilities in incremental stages. Practicum allows students to combine theory and practice in a classroom environment. Each placement is supported by an Associate Teacher, Field Advisor, and Field Coordinator. Placements are approximately six weeks of consecutive teaching time in schools and will typically follow the structure outlined below.

• Practicum 1: Professional Year (Year 4 Fall)
• Practicum 2: Professional Year (Year 4 Winter)
• Practicum 3: Professional Year (Year 5 Winter)
