1853
Born out of Resilience
StFX was founded in Arichat, Cape Breton, to serve a booming population of Highland Scottish immigrants, Acadians, and Indigenous peoples striving for upward mobility under the weight of poverty and penal laws. Woven with a spirit of perseverance from day one, the college and its bishop relocated to Antigonish in 1855, establishing the permanent foundation for the residential campus community that defines the university today.
1870
A Fight for Survival
With only 18 students enrolled and the institution on the brink of closure, StFX survived an early existential crisis when emergency government funding arrived just in time. This defining moment ensured the college could keep its doors open to the communities it was built to serve.
1894–1897
North American Trailblazers
Partnering with the Sisters of Notre Dame, StFX became the first Catholic university in North America to offer degree programs to women, officially granting its first degrees to female graduates in 1897.
1900
Growing the Campus Family
Founded at StFX to support the booming campus community, the Sisters established a legacy of service that eventually expanded across Canada and around the world.
1910
The Historic Victory Over Harvard
Proving that a small university in Nova Scotia could compete on the world stage, the StFX hockey team secured a legendary victory by defeating Harvard University. This milestone cemented a proud, enduring athletic tradition where amateur sports—including rugby, hockey, and basketball—became an essential pillar of the Xaverian spirit.
1919
Cultivating Cultural Inclusivity
Recognizing a historical neglect of French language education on campus, visionary leader Father "Jimmy" Tompkins secured a pivotal endowment from the Carnegie Corporation. This funding established a French academic chair and student bursaries, laying the groundwork for a more inclusive, multi-cultural campus that embraced its Acadian community.
Early 1920s
Choosing Independence Over Gold
StFX made the bold, highly controversial decision to reject a $3 million Carnegie Corporation proposal to merge Maritime colleges into a single "super-university" in Halifax. Choosing local identity and spiritual independence over massive financial wealth, the university committed to remaining in Antigonish to "bring the university to the people"—a decision that directly paved the way for the historic Antigonish Movement.
1928–1930s
The Antigonish Movement
Driven by visionary leaders like Father "Jimmy" Tompkins and Dr. Moses Coady, the Antigonish Movement championed adult education, cooperatives, and credit unions to empower ordinary farmers, fishermen, miners, and steelworkers. By teaching disadvantaged communities to take control of their own economic futures, the movement sought to slow regional out-migration and counter political extremism, bringing international fame to StFX as a university that truly "brought the school to the people."
1942
The Iconic X-Ring Debuts
The legendary StFX ring tradition began during WWII when Willie “Locker” MacDougall (’42) designed a unified ring featuring a bold “X” to replace individual class pins. Now copyrighted, the coveted X-Ring must be earned; only senior students meeting strict credit requirements or graduates are eligible to wear it.

The First X-Ring Ceremony
Since 1958, the X-Ring investiture ceremony held on December 3rd has been the defining milestone of the StFX student journey. As a globally recognized symbol of the "X-Spirit" and the Xaverian Family, the ring represents an unbreakable lifelong bond and grants graduates an instant connection to a global alumni network.

Taking Social Justice Global
Expanding on our local community development work, the Coady Institute was founded at StFX, establishing our campus as a global hub for leaders fighting for social justice and equity worldwide.
1960s–1970s
A Modern, Diverse Campus
Campus life evolved dramatically as sciences and professional programs took center stage. The student body grew from 500 to 2,000, giving students a greater voice in university affairs and shaping the student-centric community we love today.
1985
Achieving True Balance
For the first time in the university's history, enrollment reached a perfect 50/50 balance between male and female students.
1996
Canada’s First Service Learning Program
StFX pioneered Canada’s very first Service Learning program, solidifying our belief that higher education should always pair academic excellence with real-world, meaningful community impact.
2000–2004
StFX Students Lead the Way
From 2000 to 2004, StFX had more students per capita receive Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council awards for post-secondary study than any other university in Canada.
2008
Expanding Global Social Justice
In June 2008, construction began on the new Coady International Centre, a project that seamlessly blended the university's historic past with its global future. The initiative focused on the careful restoration of four heritage campus buildings—some dating back to 1890—to expand the reach of the world-renowned Coady International Institute. This revitalized space significantly enhanced StFX's capacity to train, connect, and empower community leaders from around the globe who are dedicated to driving local action and social justice worldwide.
2011
Empowering Future Leaders
The opening of the Frank McKenna Centre for Leadership on May 11, 2011—featuring a keynote address by former U.S. President Bill Clinton—marked a milestone in undergraduate leadership development. The $12 million facility is dedicated to broadening StFX's leadership environment by supporting targeted initiatives across public policy, business, and health. Home to an executive leadership training program, a speaker series, and a leaders-in-residence program, the center serves as a dynamic hub for cultivating top national and international talent right from the heart of campus.
2011
A New Era for Business Education
The Gerald Schwartz School of Business officially celebrated its grand opening on November 5, 2011, following a $22.7 million joint investment from the federal and provincial governments. Named in recognition of prominent businessman Gerry Schwartz's generous contributions to the university, the striking facility is easily identified by its iconic gilt dome. Housing four floors of modern classrooms, an auditorium, research labs, and student lounges, the school serves as a world-class academic home for 15 streams of Bachelor of Business Administration studies and the Bachelor of Information Systems program.
2019
The Opening of the Mulroney Institute of Governance
The landmark opening of Mulroney Hall and the Brian Mulroney Institute of Government marked a massive milestone in campus renewal. This $60-million investment created a world-class center for public policy and undergraduate research.
2020
Dr. Andrew Hakin Appointed University President
In February 2020, StFX’s Board of Governors named Dr. Andy Hakin the university’s 19th President and Vice-Chancellor. He began his term on July 1, 2020.
2026
A Historic Contribution
The Honourable Frank McKenna (’70), Julie McKenna (’72), and their family announced a historic $20 million gift to establish the McKenna Scholars Program, marking the largest single private philanthropic contribution in StFX history.
